The Storyline
Portland Timbers (5th, 7-4-5, 26pts) vs St. Louis CITY SC (14th, 3-8-5, 14pts)
The Timbers return to action after a much-deserved 10-day break following a jam-packed month of May. Closing out the month with a strong 2-1 win over Colorado Rapids, Portland ended their busiest month with a 2-2-2 record in league play, keeping them in the thick of the fight for the top spots in the West.
The month of June should provide more breathing room for the Timbers as they partake in just three matchups – the first being St. Louis at home this Sunday followed by San Jose at home on Friday the 13th and a trip to Canada on June 28th against Toronto FC.
Meeting for the first time this season, Portland and St. Louis have a short, but goal-filled history. In four total regular season meetings, Timbers-CITY SC has produced 12 goals, with the latest being a 4-4 comeback thriller for Portland at home in 2024.
This season, the first Portland-St. Louis matchup marks the halfway point for both clubs. Following a disappointing start to the campaign, St. Louis ultimately parted ways with Swedish coach Olof Mellberg less than six months into his tenure on May 27. CITY2 Head Coach David Critchley is the new CITY SC interim head coach.
Leading the way offensively for CITY SC is German forward Cedric Teuchert, who's registered three goals and one assist, ranking him first in goals and goal contributions for the club so far in 2025. No player from St. Louis has registered more than one assist this season, giving Critchley the challenge of righting the ship during their search for a permanent coach.
Timbers and CITY SC will meet again on July 13 at Energizer Park in St. Louis, their second and final regular season meeting of 2025.
