Widmer Brothers Brewing, Big Brothers Big Sisters Columbia Northwest (BBBS Columbia Northwest), the Portland Timbers and over 100 guests celebrated the 4th annual Brother’s Day at Widmer Brothers Brewing in North Portland with beer, food and music this past weekend. Brother’s Day is a celebration of the value of strong role models and the importance of brotherhood and sisterhood. Timber Joey, mingled with guests while Timbers defender David Horst and goalkeeper Jake Gleeson challenged fans to friendly games of bean bag toss.
The Widmer Brothers themselves, Kurt and Rob, created Brother’s Day as a day to celebrate the success and contributions of brothers (and sisters) everywhere and this past weekend’s event served as a fundraiser benefiting BBBS Columbia Northwest.
A supporter of the organization, Horst said, “We need to encourage people to sign up [as Big Brothers or Sisters] because [kids] need those positive influences and mentors in their life.”
Teammate Gleeson heartily agreed, “A good role model can help a kid go a long way and help them achieve a lot of things,” he said. “Role models have helped get me where I am today.”
The Brother’s Day event raised close to $2,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters Columbia Northwest with money being raised through the day’s beer sales, a special raffle, and Timbers Reserves game package sales. The grand prize raffle winner, Tyler Tatum, won a pair of 2013 Timbers season tickets.
Timbers Reserves game packages are still available for purchase at the Big Brothers Big Sisters main office (1827 NE 44th Ave, Portland) for $20 and include four tickets to the August 26 game vs. the San Jose Earthquakes Reserves, a Timbers/Widmer scarf and a key chain bottle opener.
