PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Thorns FC forward Alex Morgan and midfielder Tobin Heath have been named to the U.S. Women’s National Team roster for the 2014 CONCACAF Women’s Championships, which begin Oct. 15 in Kansas City, Kan.
The U.S. Women’s National Team opens group play against Trinidad & Tobago on Oct. 15 at Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kan.; kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m. (Pacific). The United States takes on Guatemala in its second group game Oct. 17 at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Ill.; kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. (Pacific). The final game of the group stage will take place Oct. 20 against Haiti at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C.; kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. (Pacific).
All CONCACAF Women’s Championship matches will be televised live across FOX Sports 1, FOX Sports 2 or FOX Soccer Plus and will also be available on multi-platform devices via FOX Sports GO, FOX Soccer 2GO and FOXSportsGO.com.
The two top finishers in each group after round-robin play advance to the semifinals. The winners of the semifinal matches and the third-place match will qualify directly to the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada. The fourth-place finisher will earn a spot in a two-game playoff against Ecuador, the third-place team from South America (CONMEBOL), for a berth in the FIFA Women’s World Cup. The semifinal and final round take place Oct. 24 and Oct. 26 at PPL Park in Chester, Pa.
Morgan, 25, appeared in 14 matches (13 starts) for Thorns FC after missing the first half of the season while recovering from an ankle injury. The U.S. Women’s National Team forward finished the NWSL regular season with six goals and four assists, while ranking among league leaders in shots (56) and shots on goal (36). For the United States in 2014, Morgan has played in five matches (two starts), scoring five goals, including a pair of braces, while tallying three assists.
Heath, 26, made five appearances (all starts) for Thorns FC during the 2014 regular season, battling a knee injury late in the season. In 2014, Heath has made eight appearances for the United States (three starts), recording one goal and one assist.
