PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Thorns FC midfielder Verónica Boquete was named the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Week by the media for Week 17 of the 2014 NWSL season, it was announced today. The selection marks Boquete’s third NWSL Player of the Week honor this season.
Consistently creating issues for the Houston defense throughout the match, Boquete, 27, tallied the game-winning goal in the 54th minute of Portland’s 1-0 win against the Houston Dash on Sunday in front of a NWSL-record crowd of 19,123 at Providence Park. Boquete broke the scoreless deadlock in the 54th minute, finishing a cross from defender Steph Catley in stride with a one-touch shot near the penalty spot.
The Spain Women’s National Team captain has tallied at least a point in six consecutive home matches for Thorns FC. In 13 matches this season (all starts), Boquete has recorded four goals. Her six assists are tied for second in the league.
Boquete received Player of the Week honors in Week 10 and 14 of the regular season. It is also the fifth time a Thorns FC player has been recognized this season as forwards Alex Morgan (Week 11) and Christine Sinclair (Week 15) also received this honor.
The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a selection of journalists that cover the league on a consistent basis.
