PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Thorns FC today announced that midfielder Meleana Shim has been called up by the United States U-23 Women’s National Team for three matches in the 2014 Six Nations Tournament from Feb. 24-March 6 in La Manga, Spain.
The United States will face the U-23 sides of Japan (March 1), Sweden (March 3) and Norway (March 5) during the tournament. Head coach Steve Swanson has named a roster of 20 players, including three players with National Women’s Soccer League experience in Shim, Chicago Red Stars forward Jennifer Hoy and FC Kansas City midfielder Erika Tymrak. The roster also includes six players who were drafted by clubs in January’s NWSL College Draft.
Shim, 22, was part of a 24-player training camp with the U-23 Women’s National Team in Florida from Dec. 14-21, 2013, under Swanson. The Hawaii native has been a feature of the U-23 Women’s National Team in the past, earning call-ups for the Three Nations Tournament in Norway and training camps during 2012. The 2013 Newcomer of the Year for Thorns FC, Shim recorded five goals and two assists during her NWSL rookie season.
