Thorns FC announce 2015 tryout details

PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Thorns FC will conduct two player combines on Feb. 18-19 in Long Island, N.Y., and March 4-5 in Portland, Ore., as the team prepares for its third season in the National Women’s Soccer League.

The tryouts are open to players 18 years of age and older. Interested players with previous college or professional experience are invited to register for the tryout online; the registration form is available at registration.timbers.com. The registration fee for each tryout is $110; space is limited.

Last season, defenders Courtney Niemiec and Kat Tarr and forward Hanna Terry all participated in the open tryout and signed professional contracts with Thorns FC. An undrafted rookie from La Salle University, Niemiec appeared in 11 matches (10 starts) for Thorns FC during the 2014 regular season. Tarr, a native of Vancouver, Wash., joined the club in April after spending the previous four seasons (2010-13) with SGS Essen in Germany’s Frauen Bundesliga, appearing in six matches (five starts) in 2014 for Portland. In 2013, midfielder Mana Shim and Courtney Wetzel successfully earned contracts through the open tryout. In two seasons for Thorns FC, Shim has played in 36 matches (21 starts), recording five goals and four assists.
