Thorns FC announce 2014 tryout details

Nike Ball, USWNT vs. Canada

PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Thorns FC will conduct two sessions of player tryouts on Feb. 25-26 at United Sports in Downingtown, Pa., and March 5-6 at the adidas Timbers Training Center as the team prepares for its second season in the National Women’s Soccer League.

Last season, Thorns FC midfielder Meleana Shim joined the team through the open tryout after going undrafted in the inaugural NWSL College Draft. Shim appeared in 19 games (17 starts) and finished third on the team in scoring with 12 points (5g, 2a) while earning the club’s Newcomer of the Year Award. The former Santa Clara University standout set a team record by recording a goal in four straight matches from July 14-31, 2013, helping guide Thorns FC to its first NWSL championship.

The tryouts are open to players 18 years of age and older. Interested players with previous college or professional experience are invited to register for the tryout online; the registration form is available at registration.portlandtimbers.com. The registration fee for each tryout is $95; space is limited.

Thorns FC head coach Paul Riley will be on hand to assess players. For any additional information regarding the tryout, please contact Sarah Aschwald at saschwald@timbers.com.
