In a first half that showed strong possession for the Portland Timbers but no goals, it came down to Donovan Ricketts to come up big when called upon. In the 36th minute, Philadelphia Union midfielder Danny Cruz burst through the left channel and unleashed a shot from close range. Ricketts makes a great diving save.
Then after a lightning and thunderstorm halftime delay, both teams came out trying to break through. In the 71st minute, Ricketts is again in form as the Union's Conor Casey has a go that the Timbers goalkeeper expertly parries away.
