The Portland Timbers first-ever MLS SuperDraft pick in 2011, midfielder Darlington Nagbe is quickly closing in on the club's all-time record for most appearances across all eras since 1975. Born in Liberia, Nagbe became a U.S. citizen on Sept. 10, while he and his wife are expecting their second child later this year. In this edition of "Quick Hits," we touched on a variety of topics, including Nagbe's short-lived career on the gridiron.
Sporting Idols
"Growing up, I looked up to Thierry Henry. I was a huge Arsenal fan just because of him. It was pretty cool when I got to play against him during my rookie year and the years after."
Becoming An American Citizen
"It means a lot. It was one of the main reasons my mom moved to this country was for us to get a better life, an education and hopefully get our citizenship. I'm looking forward to it and hopefully it will open up more doors and opportunities."
Fatherhood, Part Deux
"I'm expecting it to be a little bit easier, this time it's a boy. I'm excited but at the same time wonder if it'll be a little bit different. My wife is due in December so our kids will be about two years apart."
The Other Kind of Football
"[I played] five or six games [as a kicker during freshman football in high school]. There was a kickoff and obviously I didn't really know all the rules and I just got laid out--blindsided--and fell so hard. My upper body hit the ground before my legs even touched and that's when I called it quits."

"My mom also said to treat everyone with respect, the same respect that you would want from someone else so I just try to do that--treat everyone with the same respect that I would like."
