PTFC: From the Archives #Statman Edition | Valeri marks Timbers debut with goal

In the season-opening match of 2013, the Portland Timbers fell behind two goals to the New York Red Bulls. But behind a raucous crowd, Portland mustered a second-half comeback to finish the match with a 3-3 draw and help kick off a new era at the club.

1First Timer – Diego Valeri made his Timbers debut in the match, scoring 14 minutes into the game. The Argentine maestro has gone on to be Portland's all-time leading goalscorer and has played 213 MLS matches for the club. 


3Third Time's The Charm – Starting in his third straight home opener for Portland, Kalif Alhassan helped set up Valeri's goal. It was the third consecutive home opener that Alhassan delivered an assist. 


63/10History Books – Portland dominated both possession (63.5 percent) and fired 10 shots on target against RBNY. It is the only time in Portland's 10 MLS seasons that the club had double-digits shots on target and at least 62 percent possession in the same match. 


7Debut – Including Valeri, seven different players made their Timbers debuts in the match. Those seven players have gone on to play 405 league matches for the club. 


7/30Streaking – The draw was the final of a seven-game home unbeaten streak for Portland. It is also came in the midst of a run of 30 home regular-season matches where the club lost just once.
