PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers opened their preseason tournament at Providence Park Sunday with a 1-0 win over visiting Minnesota United FC. Midfielder Yimmi Chara scored for Portland in the fifth minute off a nice feed from midfielder Santiago Moreno.
Down to 10 men for the final 12 minutes due to a red card to defender Bill Tuiloma in the second half, the Timbers made a near full line change bringing on six Timbers Academy players as well as goalkeeper David Bingham, defender Josecarlos Van Rankin and midfielder Blake Bodily. The group weathered a late push from the Loons to help preserve the clean sheet.
Portland will next host Norway's Viking FK On Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 7:30pm PT (TICKETS, Webstream at Timbers.com) with Real Salt Lake and Minnesota squaring off at 5pm PT. Tickets will get fans into both games.

5' - GOAL (POR) - The Timbers took a 1-0 lead early as Santiago Moreno eluded some Minnesota players on the right wing before threading a ball forward to Yimmi Chara into the Loons' 18-yard box. Chara one-timed a rifled a shot into the lower far corner to score.
53' - CHANCE (POR) - Moreno chipped in a free kick from near the right edge of the penalty area that Jaroslaw Niezgoda headed down on frame however Minnesota goalkeeper Tyler Miller made a good save.
