TUCSON, Ariz. – The Portland Timbers ended their preseason camp in Tucson, Ariz., with a 1-0 victory over North American Soccer League (NASL) side Indy Eleven on Wednesday night at the Kino Sports Complex, recording a third consecutive shutout in preseason play.
Midfielder Ben Zemanski provided the game’s lone goal on a free kick in the 75th minute. From 25 yards out, Zemanski curled a shot around the right side of the Indy Eleven wall and tucked the ball inside the right post for the game-winning tally.
Portland concluded its two-week stay in Southern Arizona with an unbeaten record of 2-0-2 over its first four preseason games. The Timbers conceded just one goal over their four games in Tucson, and have not allowed a goal in the last 329 minutes of preseason play.
Goalkeeper Jake Gleeson played all 90 minutes for the Timbers, helping to record the club’s third shutout in four preseason games. In the 70th minute, Gleeson stopped a 20-yard drive with a diving save to his right. A minute later, he made another diving save, moving to his left, to keep the ball out of the net.
The Timbers return to Portland on Thursday and will remain in the Rose City for the duration of preseason. The club’s next preseason match is Sunday, Feb. 23 against the San Jose Earthquakes at 5 p.m. (Pacific) as part of the opening matches of the 2014 Rose City Invitational at Providence Park.
