Portland Timbers' U.S. Open Cup semifinal Aug. 7 against Real Salt Lake to be televised on ROOT SPORTS

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers today announced that the club’s Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup semifinal match against Real Salt Lake on Wednesday, Aug. 7, at Rio Tinto Stadium will be televised live on ROOT SPORTS; kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. (Pacific).


The shared telecast will feature the broadcast team of Christian Miles (play-by-play) and Brian Dunseth (analyst).

The Timbers defeated FC Dallas 3-2 on the road in the quarterfinal to advance to the semifinal of the U.S. Open Cup for the first time in club history. Portland captured victories against the Wilmington Hammerheads (USL PRO) and Tampa Bay Rowdies (NASL) in the third and fourth rounds, respectively. The Timbers have outscored opponents 10-3 in their three matches in U.S. Open Cup play.

Portland is one of four MLS clubs, along with Real Salt Lake, Chicago Fire and D.C. United, in the semifinals of the U.S. Open Cup

The 2013 U.S. Open Cup – the 100th edition of the competition – began on May 14 with 68 total teams, marking the largest field in the modern era (1995-present). The tournament includes clubs, both professional and amateur, from across the U.S. soccer landscape; all Division I, II and III clubs affiliated with U.S. Soccer participate in the tournament proper.

The U.S. Open Cup, a single-elimination tournament, has crowned a champion for 99 consecutive years beginning in 1914. The winning team has its name is engraved on the base of the Dewar Challenge Trophy and qualifies for the CONCACAF Champions League.
