MATCH RECAP | San Jose Earthquakes 1, Portland Timbers 1

Yimmi Chara, Timbers @ SJ, 9.16.20

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Yimmi Chara scored his first career MLS goal via an assist from his brother, Diego, and the Portland Timbers picked up a point in a 1-1 draw on the road against the San Jose Earthquakes Wednesday night at Earthquakes Stadium.

Match Moments

29' - SAVE (POR) - Portland goalkeeper Steve Clark made two quick saves back-back in the 28th minute. San Jose's Oswaldo Alanís sent in a low free kick that Clark got down to block but the ball deflected to Quakes' defender Florian Jungwirth. Clark then adeptly parried away Jungwirth's point-blank shot.

34' - GOAL (POR) - The Timbers scored first when Yimmi Chara and Diego Chara combined to give Portland a 1-0 lead. After a turnover at midfield, Diego flicked a ball upfield off the outside of his foot for Yimmi at the edge of the San Jose 18-yard box. Yimmi let the ball go past him, turned, and then chipped Quakes' goalkeeper James Marcinkowski to score.

36' - CHANCE (POR) - A few moments later, Portland broke out on a counterattack with a 3-v-1 advantage. Timbers defender Pablo Bonilla squared a ball for Felipe Mora. Mora then sent it to a speeding Yimmi Chara whose shot was just wide of the far post.

55' - CHANCE (POR) - Bonilla was sprung into space and carried forward along the right side. His cross skittered across the SJ box to Jaroslaw Niezgoda but the shot was saved.

76' - GOAL (SJ) - The Earthquakes equalized following a VAR decision on a play where Vako hit a low shot past Clark that in the run of play Dario Zuparic tried to save off the line. Following the review, however, referee Alex Chilowicz awarded a goal to San Jose.

89' - SAVE (POR) - Clark made a diving save to keep the score level as he denied a header from atop the six-yard box from San Jose's Chris Wondolowski.
