ABOUT THE U.S. OPEN CUP

Entering its 104th year of competition, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup features a tiered-bracket and single-game knockout format. This year’s U.S. Open Cup features 99 teams. As in 2016, teams will be paired geographically from the First Round through the Fourth Round. After the Fourth Round, a geographically- based random draw will take place to determine the Round of 16 matchups and set a fixed bracket to the Final, scheduled for Sept. 20. The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, recognized as U.S. Soccer’s national club championship, is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. The tournament has crowned a champion for 103 consecutive years dating back to 1914. This year’s winner will earn $250,000, a spot in the 2018-19 CONCACAF Champions League tournament and have its name engraved on the historic Dewar Challenge Trophy, one of the oldest nationally contested trophies in American team sports. The runner-up will take home $60,000, while the team that advances the furthest from each lower division will earn a $15,000 cash prize. FC Dallas is the defending U.S. Open Cup champion, defeating the New England Revolution 4-2. In 1999, the competition was renamed to honor American soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.

Playing at home for a second straight week, the Portland Timbers defeated FC Dallas 2-0 before a sold-out crowd of 21,144 fans at Providence Park on June 10. Scoring a goal in each half, Timbers forward Fanendo Adi notched a brace in the win, extending his goal-scoring tally to eight in regular season play in 2017.

With the Win, the Timbers (7-5-3, 24pts) have recorded a clean-sheet victory in back-to-back games. Additionally, the Timbers have lost just once in their las 13 home games. (10-1-2) dating back to the 2016 MLS campaign, including their current four-game home unbeaten streak. Portland opened the scoring in the 32nd minute when Adi finished from just outside the six-yard box. The Timbers doubled their lead when Adi found his brace in the 72nd minute.
