On a picture perfect summer evening, the Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps met at Providence Park to renew a decades old rivalry as part of the latest edition in the Cascadia Cup derby.
For Maximliano Urruti, he got things started quick. Receiving a perfectly weighted ball from his countryman Diego Valeri, Urruti carried all the way to the top of the Vancouver 18-yard box before curling a beautiful golazo into the upper 90 and igniting the home crowd.
Twelve minutes late and against the run of play, Whitecaps forward Erik Hurtado carried into the box before getting tangled with the Timbers defense and goes down. Referee Kevin Stott pointed to the spot for a penalty kick which Vancouver's Pedro Morales converted to make it 1-1.
In the 25th minute, the Timbers are called for another penalty in the box and again Vancouver's Morales converted to make it 2-1 Whitecaps.
Late into first half stoppage time, Vancouver's Hurtado received a pass at the top of the six. His one-timer is stopped with a great save by Donovan Ricketts but Hurtado gathers rebound and puts it in for a 3-1 Vancouver lead.
Early into the second half, after receiving a long cross from Vancouver's Sebastian Fernandez, Jordan Harvey fired a low shot into the far corner to make it 4-1 Whitecaps.
But the Timbers, after a raft of attacking substitutions in the second half pull one back in the 77th minute. Valeri sent in a looping cross for the back post where Gastón Fernández lurked to head home a goal and make it 4-2.
In the 86th minute, Timbers continued their comeback assault. Valeri again served a ball into the box where Fanendo Adi chested it to himself, added a juggle and then juggled it again to an on-rushing Will Johnson who sublimely slammed it home. Score cut to 4-3.
