Goals | Portland Timbers vs. San Jose Earthquakes FC - Sept. 7, 2014

Liam Ridgewell, Timbers vs. SJ, 9.7.14

On a scorching Sunday afternoon in the Rose City, the Portland Timbers hosted the San Jose Earthquakes at Providence Park. The Timbers came out flying in the first half, dominating possession and creating numerous looks on goal. However, it was the Quakes who struck first.

In the 21st minute, San Jose's Chris Wondolowski cleaned up a loose ball in the Timbers box to give the Quakes a 1-0 lead.

As the second half got underway, the Timbers came out strong but the Quakes managed to find another. In the 48th minute, SJ midfielder Cordell Cato pounced on a loose ball to give the visiting side a 2-0 lead.

But Portland continued to dominate possession and attack. In the 54th minute, they were rewarded. Maestro Diego Valeri chipped a short ball over the SJ backline for a speeding Alvas Powell. Powell fought for it, stuck with it, and banked it in off the far post to pull a goal back for Portland.

Timbers kept up the attack. In the 74th minute, Valeri spied Timbers defender Liam Ridgewell lurking back post. With a long lofted ball across the face of goal, Ridgewell sprinted and tapped it in before doing his log roll celebration in front of the Timbers Army. The score was all square at 2-2.

The excitement continued. Wondolowski made it 3-2 for the Quakes in the 85th minute.

But then the Timbers came back one minute later. Powell sprinted down a pass from Valeri before cutting it back to an open Kalif Alhassan. Alhassan turned and fired to tie it up again at 3-3. It was also Valeri's third assist of the match.
