CONCACAF Champions League | Guyana Journal: Day 2

GEORGETOWN, Guyana – The first full day in Guyana helped shed some light on one of the question marks heading into Tuesday night’s CONCACAF Champions League match against Alpha United (5pm PT, FOX Soccer Plus - CLICK FOR DETAILS) as the team got a feel for Providence Stadium and its playing surface with an afternoon training session today.

A refreshing rain shower hit Georgetown this morning, but by the time the Timbers took the field for training at Providence Stadium around 1 p.m. local time, the weather was back to its hot and humid nature.

The coincidentally named Providence Stadium, where the Timbers will play Alpha United in their first-ever CCL match Tuesday, is the national stadium of Guyana. The venue was originally constructed for the Cricket World Cup hosted by West Indies area countries in 2007. Some of the signage and specially commissioned murals from that event still hang in the concourse.

The 15,000-seat stadium, while spacious, has a unique charm to it. And before the Timbers took the field for training the grounds crew was carefully putting the final touches on the field, hand-painting the midfield line and touching up the center circle.

The boys took a team picture on the pitch following training, documenting the first stages of the club's maiden voyage in the CONCACAF Champions League. Tomorrow, it's game day.
