CONCACAF Champions League: Goals via Social | Portland Timbers vs. CD Olimpia | Sept. 16, 2014

Maximiliano Urruti, Timbers vs. Olimpia, 9.16.14

On a beautiful late summer eve, the Portland Timbers hosted their first-ever CONCACAF Champions League match against Honduras' CD Olimpia. With the Timbers Army in fine voice, the Timbers drew first blood. We captured the goals on Vine.

In the 11th minute, forward Maximiliano Urruti took a ball from Will Johnson in the box and quickly slotted it past Los Leones goalkeeper Noel Valladares to give the home side a 1-0 lead. It was Urruti's second CCL goal this campaign and 11th overall across all competitions in 2014.

Olimpia came back quick and in the 20th minute, defender Kevin Alvarez headed home a ball off a corner to tie it up at 1-1.

But the high pace continued and in the 26th minute, Gastón Fernández and Johnson combined for some excellent quick passes in the midfield to push forward. Johnson kept carrying and blistered a shot from distance that Valladares got a hand to but the ball still hit the upper ninety.

Just before the half, Olimpia tied it up again at 2-2 after Romell Quioto pokes in a loose ball from Timbers goalkeeper Andrew Weber.

The second half continued apace. With the Timbers continuing to aggresively attack forward, Johnson chipped a beautiful ball through the Olimpia backline that Urruti sped through on. The perfectly timed run left the forward 1v1 with the 'keeper whome he chipped past then hammered home into goal for a 3-2 Timbers lead.

The Timbers kept pushing. In the 72nd minute, Fernández lofted in a corner kick that Portland defender Rauwshan McKenzie leapt high for then snapped a header down to make it 4-2 for the Timbers. Social didn't get this goal, but it did get #GREENSMOKE.
