Cascadia Cup | Timbers sit atop Cascadia Cup standings with chance to clinch on Sunday

Cascadia Cup, Timbers vs. SJ, 10.27.12

The Portland Timbers travel to Seattle, Washington to continue their 2017 Cascadia Cup campaign, as they take on Seattle Sounders FC at CenturyLink Field (6:30pm PT, FS1).

Each rival has played in four Cascadia matches thus far, and the Timbers currently sit alone atop the standings with seven points. A win on Sunday over Seattle would clinch the Cascadia Cup for the Timbers–their first since 2012.

The last time these two teams met was in late June as the Timbers drew Seattle 2-2 at Providence Park. Since then, the Timbers and Sounders have each played Vancouver one time. Portland took home three points on the road (July 23), while Seattle ended its Wednesday night match with the Whitecaps, knotted at 1-1.

Created by the supporters of the Sounders, Whitecaps and Portland Timbers, the Cascadia Cup has been around since 2004. It was contested by all three teams in USL until 2009, when the Sounders made their MLS debut. The Whitecaps and Timbers continued battling for the Cup in the lower divisions until 2011, when both moved up into MLS, allowing the Sounders to get back in on the competition.

The teams will meet a total of nine times this year, with each club playing the others three times during the MLS regular season.
