Cascadia Cup Standings Update

The Cascadia Cup

Within the Northwest there are all kinds of rivalries between Portland, Seattle and Vancouver B.C. Which coffee is the best? Who is more ecofriendly? Who has the best microbrews? One rivalry stands true throughout the I-5 Corridor: The Cascadia Cup.

Supporters on Cascadia: Why the Cup Matters

In soccer, supporters groups are the heartbeat of every team, as this is as true as ever with Portland, Seattle and Vancouver B.C. In 2004, the three major supporters groups, the Timbers Army (Portland), the Emerald City Supporters (Seattle) and Vancouver’s Southsiders all came together to put a special twist on the rivalry, and after further review the Cascadia Cup was created to be given to the team with the most points in head-to-head play between the three teams.

With the 2012 MLS season in full swing and at least one game played between each of the three contenders, the Portland Timbers currently sit atop of the Cascadia Cup table with four points in two games. Seattle sits even on points with Portland but have played three games. Vancouver is in third with two points.

The Sounders were able to climb into the second spot with their 2-0 victory over the Whitecaps this past Saturday. The leading Cascadia Cup goal scorer Freddie Montero and teammate Eddie Johnson provided the two goals for the Sounders.

With this weekend’s match between the Timbers and Whitecaps FC approaching (7:30pm PT, ROOT SPORTS750 AM The Game / La Pantera 940 Presented by KeyBank), so does the countdown to the conclusion of this season's competition between Cascadia rivals. After today’s match, three games remain for Portland, three for Seattle and two for Vancouver.
